March 2007 NewsletterFun -- Fitness -- FriendsThe first four items of this newsletter is pretty important to our program. The last two items are informational opportunities. We're in hot water now...The water is warmer. At the College of Saint Mary's the staff is trying to work with us. The pool is a multi user facility, and in reality we are not the primary group. They have lap swimming, water aerobics, arthritis exercise class, swim lessons, high school teams, us, and other special populations. Ideally a fitness lap swim program would prefer the water temperature to fall between 79-81, but this is not very conducive to the many other groups. I realize, and CSM realizes, that 89 degrees makes fitness swimming very difficult. We cannot place the hose in the water because of the concerns of the facility management staff. One of our swimmers suggested that we bring a few fans and to place them strategically on the deck. As the coach, I will start shortening the main sets and do more technique work at the end of practice. If you have any ideas, then please share them with me. Pay upIt is time to pay $75 for the next quarter: April, May, and June. As always an option is available to pay monthly rate of $30. Awards luncheonOn April 2, Erin Sullivan will be honored at an Alumni Awards luncheon for the College of Public Administration and Community Service. John Hartigan bought a few extra spaces at the luncheon; visit with John if you would like to attend. For those that know Erin, she coaches for us on Thursdays (equipment day) and does a wonderful job. She is extremely involved our community in countless ways from putting on swim meets, to volunteering for the YWCA. Thank you!Thank you to our volunteers who took over the program while I was gone on swim meet vacations. Laurie Wells, Erin Sullivan, Carie O'Banion, Molly Romero, and Zac Samland you all did a fantastic job and I appreciate your giving spirit to the program. Leukemia Society fundraiserOne of our swimmers, Kelvin Thurman, is very involved with the Leukemia Society and has put together a fundraiser. Although I to not advocate drinking and driving, if you are going to drink then you might as well be driving a bicycle. It sounds like a fun event, open up this Microsoft Word file for more details.
