Fun -- Fitness -- Friends

The first two articles are repeats. Once a year it is good to be said. The final three articles are originals, be informed by giving them a quick glance. Before you get to the newsletter a huge "thank you" goes to the men's locker room committee for buying us a new pace clock!

Lane Etiquette

Since we are a good size program with 3 to 6 swimmers per lane on a regular basis, it might be time to offer some lane etiquette.

  1. Always brush your teeth before you come to swim practice!!
  2. Get is the water safely by getting in feet first -- do not dive in the water.
  3. If you need to rest, then rest in the corner, preferably the right hand corner.
  4. When leaving on the interval, give the person ahead of you a 5 second lead (not three seconds and not ten seconds -- it must be FIVE).
  5. If you accidentally contact (hit or kick) someone, use good manners by apologizing (even if it didn't hurt you or if it was the other person's fault).
  6. Talk with your lane mates to determine who should go first, and the first person should let the rest of the lane know when they are leaving.
  7. Help each other and enjoy the company of each other, you are part of an incredible group of people.
  8. Brush your teeth!

If you have other lane etiquette suggestions, then please drop me a line.

Other things unique about our program!

Leave when you need to go but be at practice on time. We have a ten minute late policy. If you are ten minutes late then you will be asked not to participate (a warning the first time). Before you leave, it is in your best health interest to do at least a 100 cool down before you hop out of practice 25's sprint are not considered a cool down.

Coaching the Masters is more of a hobby and meant to be fun - for me and for you. Besides paying affordable dues to swim, it is requested that you give something back to the sport you enjoy. Giving back can be many different things; from helping put in / take out lane ropes at practice, to taking pictures of swimmers at summer league swim meets. Get involved -- just a little!

Kayak Water Polo

Check out this web site, http://www.nebraskakayakpolo.com! Would you be interested in participating in a kayak water polo league. It sounds like a lot of fun and two of us are planning on doing this, so now we just need six more people to join us. Contact Randy Cassling at swim400im@cox.net or Todd Samland at tsamland@unomaha.edu.

Up Close and Personal

UNOmaha will be hosting this years Conference Championships. Volunteers are needed for this level of event. Two sessions are held each day from February 21 to 24 (Thursday to Sunday). The first session of the day starts at 10 am, with the second session beginning at 6 pm in the evening. The sessions will last about 2 1/2 hours. Please send an e-mail if you can help on any of those days, tsamland@unomaha.edu. This is a great way to watch some excellent technique and fast swimming, up close and personal

East Coast Housing

One of our summer swimmers, Megan Guthmiller, will be doing a summer internship on the east coast. Her housing she arranged has fallen through so she is looking again for some very affordable housing in Hartford, Connecticut. If you have any connections that can help Megan then please e-mail her at mguthmiller@hotmail.com.

Yes, we will have practice at the normal times on Valentine Day and President's Day
