June 2006 NewsletterFun -- Fitness -- FriendsFunWell it is that time of year - Vacation Time. From July 12 to July 25 I will be in Kalispell, Montana. From August 7 to August 12 I will be at Lake Okoboji. Help will be needed to keep our program going while I am gone. If you can coach one or two practices, then that would be wonderful. I will leave a practice for each day, but if you coach that practice then you have the power to change it and do whatever you want to do. Yes, you can become Supreme Dictator and with your power you can affect the beginning waking minutes of many people in our city. Please e-mail Todd if you can coach one or two of these days: July 12 to July 26 (13 practices) and August 8 to August 12 (5 practices). Fitness: Lessons from Rich KrebsRich Krebs taught me a valuable lesson about Masters swimming when I first started coaching. Rich joined the program without trying it out -- he just signed up. He never showed up that first session. Then Rich signed up for the next session. He never showed up for the second session. Rich signed up for two years straight and never showed up for a single swim. Then one day Rich finally showed up and he ended up swimming 3 to 5 times per week for many years to come. Then, unfortunately Rich had to move and he no longer swam with us (nor signed up). This is what I learned - it was not up to me to decide what was best for Rich. Would I have liked him to swim the first session? Of course, but he will make it when he could. Who am I to know what is going on in a person's life and the reasons they cannot make practice: work, family illness, faulty alarm clock, rather run today, etc. Once I recognized that it is not for me to decide what is best for a person, I then realized I accept people into our program no matter how often they can or cannot make it. If you want to swim 5 times a week or once a month, that is your decision and you are accepted. If this is the first time in a swim fitness program or a return after several months off, the swimmer is accepted. Instead of building barriers let's work on letting people enjoy swimming (when ever they can make it). Thank you Rich Krebs for teaching me the lesson early in my career. FriendsThe Women's Only Triathlon will be held on Saturday, August 26. This is an awesome event! It is fun to see so many people of different ages and ability levels participating (and so many people helping). Only women can participate and only men can volunteer. but anyone can be a sponsor. We have about 7 sponsors and are looking to add 3 to 5 more. If you or your business (or if you know of another business) would like to be affiliated with this event then please write or call Todd. Sponsors need to be secured before July 6 to allow time for the entry forms to printed and mailed by July 12. Bits & PiecesThe third quarter is approaching, July to September. Please pay by July 11 or wait until July 27. You may pay $75 for the quarter or pay $30 per month. If you are not sure if you need to pay, then please contact Todd. July 4th is a swim day from 7 to 8 am. Have a good swim before the big picnic.Monday, Wednesday & Saturday have one to two less people per lane than Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
