April 2006 Newsletter AddendumFun -- Fitness -- FriendsCinco de Mayo - Cinco de Mayo - Cinco de Mayo - Cinco de Mayo - Cinco de MayoIt is that time of year, celebration of the revolution – Cinco de Mayo. On May 5, 1862 Mexico began a revolution and on May 5 of 2003 we started our Masters swim program. They fought for liberty and freedom and we encourage a fitness lifestyle through swimming. In that first year we averaged 53 swimmers per month (18 per practice). In 2004 we averaged 58 swimmers per month (22 per practice). In this past year we averaged 67 swimmers per month (25 per practice). Thank you all so much for being part of this program. A friend ask me, ‘don’t you ever want to just sleep-in?’ Absolutely not! I truly love coming to practice, because I really enjoy so many of the friendships that have come into my life through Masters. The other reason is because, unlike any other level of swimming I could coach, Masters is where I feel appreciated – and what a great feeling. With all of that said, let’s go to breakfast and celebrate our Cinco de Mayo. Instead of having breakfast on May 5, let’s have it on the next day so more swimmers might be able to join us. Saturday, May 6 after practice, we will celebrate three wonderful years with breakfast as my treat. Anybody have a suggestion where we can go? A FirstThis upcoming weekend will be our first masters swim meet held at College of Saint Mary’s. People from across the region will be coming to participate in the meet. If you think our group is quirky at times (which it is, in a fun way), then you should come to a Masters swim meet. It truly is a fun time, and you can create some great friendships. Most of the volunteer positions are filled, but maybe you can come to see if any help is needed or come to cheer on some lane mates. The meet starts at 4 pm on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday (yes we will still have practice on Saturday morning). Related to the MeetSteve Scheuber has an awesome idea, let’s make a list of restaurants our swimmers would recommend to our out of town guests. He would like to keep the list narrowed to eating establishments unique to Omaha – doesn’t this sound great. An example would Mark’s Bistro that is owned and operated by Omaha people (the co-owner is one of our swimmers, Molly Romero). Please no franchise eating establishments, we want our guests to enjoy some of the uniqueness of Omaha. When you nominate an eating establishment please include the following information: name, address, phone number, and price range for the entrée. If you don’t have all of the information, it’s ok to send what you know. Steve will compile the information and print it up for the people coming for the swim meet. Send your selections to Steve.Scheuber@yahoo.com. Try to send the information in the next 48 hours. After the meet Steve will place the list on our website – very cool idea, good job Steve. So if you think of a place next week, still send it to Steve!! Can you Wiki?Actually, YES you can wiki. Go to our web page http://www.omahamastersswim.com/news/wiki.html and you can make comments and keep in touch with each other outside of the pool. So now the web page is more than program information, it is a fun way to connect. Go wiki right now |
