Omaha Masters Swimmer Peter Silberstein selected to join elite team of 24 to ride 3300 miles across America

A team of 24 cancer survivors, advocates, caregivers, physicians and researchers has been selected to ride from San Diego to Washington, DC this fall as members of the Bristol-Myers Squibb "Tour of Hope", marking the third year of the cross-country journey. Driven by their ties to cancer, this team of avid cyclists will cover 3,300 miles of American landscape in nine days to share their experiences and inspire those they meet along the way to learn more about cancer research. Six-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will lead the Team at the kick-off in San Diego and into Washington, DC for the finale, and will join the Team at points along the route.

UPDATED 7 SEPTEMBER 2005:

Peter Silberstein, M.D., chief oncologist at CUMC, has been selected from more than 1,000 entrants to participate in the upcoming Bristol Meyers Squibb Tour of Hope, September 29th - October 8.

Twenty four individuals will be participating and the purpose of the cross country trek is to support our family members and friends that have been touched by cancer and show our support for cancer research. During the event, everyone will be encouraged to "Make the Promise". For more details on the ride, please link to Dr. Silberstein's page on the TOH website:

Here is where I need your help! We will be having an official send-off rally on the CU campus (see flyer in link below) on Friday, September 23 in front of St. John's Church at 11:00 am. Kent McNeil, Trek of Omaha and Highgear owner, and cancer survivor will do the ribbon cutting. Father Schlegel, President of Creighton will preside.

The official Trek support vehicle will be here on display

This is the van that will be supporting the 2005 riders.

You are invited to participate in this event. To participate, please:

Be at the fountain at 10:45 am with your bike and in cycling gear. Remember your helmet because we will be making a short ceremonial ride that will take about 15 minutes from the CU campus to the Qwest Center.

We are anticipating a great turnout from the local newspaper and TV stations so it would be great to have a big group of riders. I'm working on securing TOH jerseys for those who participate but I don't have that worked out yet. Watch the news that evening, you more than likely will be featured!

For now just mark your calendars and email me if you plan to participate. I will need your jersey size in case we secure the TOH jerseys. If we do, you will get to keep it.

Wonderful raffle prizes will be given away at the event for those that have signed the promise.

Hopefully, the campus bike security patrol will escort us on the event. Here are the event details:
